Creative Conversations Follow Up Day

CMS Watlington Road, Oxford, United Kingdom
Creative Conversations seeks to give priority to the voices of those who experience marginalisation, exclusion and deprivation. The project fosters careful and thoughtful listening with the intention that the voices of others will challenge and inform the responses of our own Christian communities. Creative Conversations helps Christian groups explore the everyday experiences of those who find themselves marginalised and excluded in various ways from mainstream society. By introducing basic research methods that can be used in daily life, Creative Conversations aims to introduce new depth to the way we listen to others in our day-to-day encounters. Creative Conversations was launched in March 2015 and the purpose of this day is to work together to further understand and develop it as a practical tool for research which can be used in a wide variety of contexts. With this in mind we would like to invite you to find out more and perhaps join us in this journey of learning to join with us in November. The aim of the Creative Conversations Follow-Up Day is: o To hear presentations from those who have been involved in the first round and to learn from their experiences about how to develop this as a practical research method o To learn more together about the theory and practice of convening conversational spaces which enable people of difference to engage more deeply with each other. o To share more about the theological thinking behind Creative Conversations and how this approach might help us to explore ways of approaching mission in marginalised places o To meet others who are exploring similar approaches. The day will be held at CMS, Watlington Road, Oxford, OX4 6BZ http://pioneer.cms-uk.org/pioneer-mission-leadership-training-course/about/howtofindus/ The day itself is free of charge. Lunch will be available to buy at the CMS canteen. Please book into the day by email to Mike Pears at the address below. If you would like to find out more about Creative Conversations please feel free to contact Mike Pears or Cathy Ross and log on to the Urban Life website www.urbanlife.org Mike Pears: mikepears@hotmail.co.uk Cathy Ross: Cathy.Ross@rcc.ac.uk

Hearts and Minds Day Conference

Bristol Baptist College Bristol Baptist College, The Promenade, Clifton, Bristol, United Kingdom
'Hearts and Minds' is a day conference offered by Bristol, Regent's Park, and South Wales Baptist Colleges. It is intended mainly for Baptist ministers working in pastoral ministry or chaplaincy (that is to say, those who do not generally have the opportunity to present papers at academic conferences). It is particularly aimed at those who enjoy thinking, reading, and grappling with theological issues, such as practical theology, biblical studies or ethics. It is an opportunity to offer a short (20-30 minute) papers in an encouraging, friendly environment; and in turn to engage thoughtfully with the contributions of others. Feel free to offer a paper on any broadly theological subject, or simply come to enjoy the work of others. Our keynote speaker, Ian Stackhouse, will be addressing the subject 'Held in Love: A Theological and Pastoral Response to Dementia'. It promises to be a stimulating day, but contributors are needed to make it so! Do consider joining us. The day is free, and an optional lunch is provided at a cost of £5, or you can bring your own. If you would like lunch provided please let us know at the time of booking. To submit a paper, contact Helen Paynter by 15th May: paynterh@bristol-baptist.ac.uk To book your place, please contact Heather by 22nd May: reception@bristol-baptist.ac.uk Hearts and Minds conference publicity

Ash Barker: From Bangkok to Bristol

ashbarkerAfter 25 years of urban mission in Melbourne and Bangkok, Ash Barker with wife Anji and son Aiden are now immersed in the life of Winson Green, Birmingham, where they have founded and lead Newbigin House. Ash was the founding director of Urban Neighbours of Hope, and is the current director of Micah Global’s International Society for Urban Mission. Ash has been invited to reflect on the question: what have you learned about the nature of incarnational missional communities through your time in Bangkok? How might these insights both shape and challenge our approach to mission in a city like Bristol? Tickets are free to book but we ask for a £5 donation on the day. Recovering Compassion: Post-Soviet Insights for Anabaptists

Bristol Baptist College Bristol Baptist College, The Promenade, Clifton, Bristol, United Kingdom
When the Soviet Union fell apart, the national social support system fell apart, too. Yet one of the biggest surprises of the perestroika era was the resilience of compassion. Especially the churches - including Baptist churches - quickly rediscovered their forgotten (previously forbidden) role as care-givers to those members of society that were suffering the most - children, the elderly, people with disabilities, people with addictions. Does their experience have anything to teach Anabaptists in a post-Christian world? Presented by Mary Raber. Since 1991 Mary has been teaching church history and other subjects at various theological schools in the former Soviet Union. Presently she is sponsored by Mennonite Mission Network (Mennonite Church USA). Mary holds a PhD in history (2015) from the University of Wales and IBTS Centre (Amsterdam). She divides her time between St. Louis, Mis-souri (USA) and Odessa, Ukraine. There is no charge for this event, but please book in if you want a simple meal prior to the lecture. Please call the Bristol Baptist College on 01179 467050 if you would like further information or to book a place.

The Centre for Anabaptist Studies 2017 Annual Lecture

Bristol Baptist College Bristol Baptist College, The Promenade, Clifton, Bristol, United Kingdom
‘A Peace Witness under Pressure: The Bruderhof Community in England, 1936-1942’ IanRandallDr Ian Randall explores the experiences of the Bruderhof, a Christian community which began in Germany in 1920 and which had to escape from the country in the 1930s because of Nazi pressure. By this time the community was an explicitly Anabaptist one, inspired by the early Hutterites. At first, the community members were welcomed in England and their community, established in the Cotswolds, grew substantially. They were part of wider peace and community endeavours of the time. Significant numbers of British people joined the Bruderhof. But, with the start of the Second World War, the German members came to be regarded with suspicion, and British members were unpopular in the local area because they were pacifists. The result of these pressures was that by 1942 over 300 community members had left England to try to forge a new life in South America. This period of Bruderhof life shows Anabaptist convictions being worked out in England during a time of great political uncertainty. After training for ministry at Regent’s Park College, Oxford, Ian had two local church pastorates, and then lectured and supervised research for nearly twenty years at Spurgeon’s College, London, and the International Baptist Theological Seminary, Prague. In recent years, he and his wife have lived in Cambridge, where Ian has been a hospital chaplain, a minister in an ecumenical missional church, and a research associate of the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide. He has written extensively in the areas of renewal, mission and Baptist and Anabaptist history. The annual lecture will take place at Bristol Baptist College (The Promenade, Clifton Down BS8 3NJ) at 7.30pm on Tuesday 21 November. This event is free and no booking is required – unless you want to join us for a sandwich meal at 6.30pm, which does need to be booked and for which we’d request a £3.50 donation Recordings of previous annual lectures are available on request. The Centre also offers an MA course, available via taught block weeks in Bristol or online, and postgraduate research degrees. For further information about any aspect of the Centre please contact Stuart Murray Williams by email anabaptist@bristol-baptist.ac.uk

Hearts and Minds Conference

South Wales Baptist College 54 Richmond Road, Cardiff, United Kingdom
Hearts and Minds is an annual day conference, sponsored by three Baptist Theological Colleges, which is designed to create a hospitable space for Baptists to think and talk about theology together. This year, hearts and minds will be held at the South Wales Baptist College, 54 Richmond Road, Cardiff, CF24 3UR on Thursday 3rd May 2018, 9.30am - 4.00pm. The day will cost £10. which includes refreshments and lunch. To book your place, please contact Anita Monks by 19th April by emailing am@swbc.org.uk Keynote Speaker We look forward to welcoming Dr Kang-San Tan, General Director of BMS World Mission, as our keynote speaker. Prior to starting at BMS in October 2017, Kang-San was Executive Director of AsiaCMS. Heis the official spokesperson for the World Evangelical Alliance on interfaith issues and is a member of the Lausanne Theology Advisory Group. He is familiar with the UK scene having previously taught at Redcliffe College in Gloucester. He has a PhD in the Theology of Religions from Aberdeen University and his research interests include missional leadership, growing missional communities, Asian religions (Islam and Buddhism) and interfaith concerns. He is married to Loun-Ling and their daughter, Chara lives and works in Canada. Short-paper Sessions In addition to the keynote address, one of the attractions of hearts and minds is that it creates space for people to present papers about a range of theological topics. For some that means sharing part of the research that they are working on as part of a postgraduate course. For others, it means sharing their ideas about a topic which is of particular interest to them. During the short paper sessions, the idea is for a presentation of 15 to 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes open discussion. If you are interested in presenting such a paper at hearts and minds in May, please send a one page summary of the paper you would like to present to Dr Peter Stevenson at SWBC (pks@swbc.org.uk) by Thursday 23rd March 2018 at the latest. As car parking space at the College is very limited please use public transport where possible. The closest train station is Cardiff Queen Street. It’s also possible to walk from Cardiff Central station – but allow yourself 20 to 30 minutes for walking through town (depending on how quickly you walk!).

Cancelled – An Afternoon with Shane Claiborne and Tony Campolo

Westbury on Trym Baptist Church Reedley Road, Bristol, United Kingdom

Due to the current Corona Virus outbreak this event has been cancelled. Keep on eye on our website and social media though, as we hope to reschedule this event for later in the year when it is safe to do so.

Join us for an afternoon of conversation with Shane Claiborne and Tony Campolo.

On Wednesday 13th May, 2pm - 5pm at Westbury-on-Trym Baptist Church, Bristol. Tickets are free but an offering will be collected on the day for Red Letter Christians. Book your ticket at https://redletterbristol.eventbrite.co.uk Shane Claiborne is a prominent speaker, activist, and best-selling author. Shane worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, and founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia. He heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of folks who are committed to living "as if Jesus meant the things he said." Shane is a champion for grace which has led him to jail advocating for the homeless, and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. Now grace fuels his passion to end the death penalty and help stop gun violence. Shane’s books include Jesus for President, Red Letter Revolution, Common Prayer, Follow Me to Freedom, Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream, Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers, Executing Grace, his classic The Irresistible Revolution, and his newest book, Beating Guns. He has been featured in a number of films including "Another World Is Possible" and "Ordinary Radicals." His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Shane speaks over one hundred times a year, both in the USA and internationally. His work has appeared in Esquire, SPIN, Christianity Today, TIME, and The Wall Street Journal, and he has been on everything from Fox News and Al Jazeera to CNN and NPR. He’s given academic lectures at Harvard, Princeton, Liberty, Duke, and Notre Dame. Tony Campolo is Professor of Sociology at Eastern University, and was formerly on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania. For 40 years, he founded and led the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that created and supported programs serving needy communities in the Third World as well as in “at risk” neighborhoods across North America. More recently, Dr. Campolo has provided leadership for the Red Letter Christians movement. He blogs regularly at his own website. Tony and his wife Peggy live near Philadelphia, and have two children and four grandchildren. About Red Letter Christians: The goal of Red Letter Christians is simple: To take Jesus seriously by endeavoring to live out His radical, counter-cultural teachings as set forth in scripture, and especially embracing the lifestyle prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount. By calling ourselves Red Letter Christians, we refer to the fact that in many Bibles the words of Jesus are printed in red. We, therefore, assert that we are committed first and foremost to doing what Jesus said. Jesus calls us away from the consumerist values that dominate contemporary America. Instead, he calls us to meet the needs of the poor. He also calls us to be merciful, which has strong implications in terms of war and capital punishment. After all, when Jesus tells us to love our enemies, he probably means we shouldn’t kill them. Staying true to the foundation of combining Jesus and justice, Red Letter Christians mobilizes individuals into a movement of believers who live out Jesus’ counter-cultural teachings.
